Chris Evans And Jeremy Renner Degrade Black Widow In Interview

Another promo day, another bump in the road for the Avengers promo tour. The cast of Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, which is currently in the theaters and bound to break some records in viewership, are currently swamped with promo. Not long after Robert Downey Jr. walked out of his interview because the interviewer asked deep, personal questions, his co-stars Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans have surely raised some eyebrows, too.

In an interview with Digital Spy, the reporter starts the talk with a question about fans’ desire to see Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, ending up with either Evans’ Captain America or Renner’s Hawkeye character. In the movie, Black Widow hooks up with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. After asking what they thought about that development, Renner responds: “She’s a sl*t”, to which his co-star starts laughing. “I was going to say something along that line,” Evans adds. “A complete wh*re.”

The inexcusable display of misogyny from both actors did not go unnoticed by fans who, have for a long time, been making remarks about how the character isn’t represented in merchandise as much as her male counterparts. Even though Disney says that “Black Widow is a staple in the Marvel Universe with a robust consumer products program,” a lot of fans pointed out that the character only appears on products marketed towards females.

Not long after the interview aired, both stars have issued separate apologies. “Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America,” Evans said. “We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize,” while Renner claims: “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
