Manning is the son of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning. His younger brother, Eli Manning, was also a professional quarterback for the New York Giants.

Peyton Manning played for his high school team, the Isidore Newman “Greenies” in New Orleans, Louisiana. During the three seasons he started as a quarterback, he led the team to a 34-5 record of wins and losses. During his time at Newman High School, Manning started wearing jersey number 18 in honor of his older brother, Cooper Manning, who was unable to continue playing football due to spinal stenosis.  Manning’s younger brother, Eli, also wore the number 18 jersey when he played for the school. The Isidore Newman School has since retired the number.

Manning was named Gatorade Circle Player of the Year in high school and was heavily recruited by over 60 major university football programs, including Mississippi, Florida State, and Texas.

Manning went to college at the University of Tennessee. As a freshman, he initially was selected as the third-string quarterback. When the leading quarterbacks were injured, Manning was promoted to lead quarterback and held the position for the remainder of his college career. He set the record as the Tennessee Volunteers’ all-time leading passer, with 11,201 yards. He was also gifted academically and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honors society for academics.

In 1998, Manning was the first pick in the NFL draft, being taken by the Indianapolis Colts. Manning played for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2011. In 2011, Manning suffered an injury that required neck surgery and left him out of most of the season. The Colts released him from his contract, and he was picked up by the Denver Broncos.

Manning played for Denver from 2012 until 2015. After leading the team to a victory in Super Bowl 50, Manning retired from professional football.
