Early Years of Gene Simmons

Gene Simmons is probably the most famous Israeli American musician in history.  His beginnings were in Haifa, Israel, on August 25, 1949, to Jewish immigrants.  He was born Chaim Witz.  His dad was Ferenc Yehiel Witz, a carpenter, and his mother was Florence Klein.  His family was dirt poor by his own admission and barely scraped by during his youth. 

When he was eight years old, Simmons immigrated to the United States with his mother and took residence in New York City.  He changed his name to Eugene Klein and later attended Richmond College and Sullivan County Community College classes.  Gene became interested in a music career at that point and took on his stage name as a tribute to Jumpin Gene Simmons, an early rockabilly singer. 

Simmons himself will tell you that if he were not watching The Ed Sullivan Show when the Beatles made their initial appearance, he would not be where he is today.  They had that big of an influence on him.  His first band was called Lynx, who later called themselves the Missing Links.

After that and stints with the Long Island Sounds band, Simmons met Stanley Eisen.  Eisen would ultimately use the stage name, Paul Stanley.  Together they formed Wicked Lester, who recorded a never-released album on Epic Records.  They went on to form KISS, and the rest is history.
