His mother, Kine Gueye Thiam, was a dancer, and his father, Mor Thiam, was a percussionist. They moved to Union City, New Jersey, when he was seven. Before settling in Newark, New Jersey, he spent time between the United States and Senegal. Akon attended high school at William L.
