Who is Eminem?
Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972. His parents are Deborah ‘Debbie’ Rae Nelson and Marshall Bruce ‘Bruce’ Mathers Junior. Soon afterward, Eminem’s parents split up, and his father left for California to start a new family. Marshall wrote to his father a few times throughout his childhood but never got a reply. He’s since said that he doesn’t even remember what his father looked like. He and his mom, Deborah, moved around a lot. He changed schools every few months. Moving around meant that he didn’t get to form any lasting bonds with people.
His early school years were full of loneliness, and bullying. He struggled at school, but that didn’t stop his passion for English. Though his mother would throw him out of the house and neglect him, he had comic books and words as a refuge. In fact, he aspired to be a comic book artist before he knew about hip hop.
Where Did the Name Eminem Come From?
Finally, Marshall and Deborah settled on the east side of Detroit when he was 12 years old. He would later go to Lincoln High School, in Warren, Michigan. At 14, he discovered hip-hop. He wrote his first rap song when he began rapping with his high school friend, Mike Ruby. They would use names like ‘Manix’ and ‘M&M’, which would go on to evolve into Eminem. His reputation grew among the rap community. He took part in freestyle rap battles, and several rap groups recruited him. He signed with Jeff and Mark Bass’s FBT Productions and recorded his debut rap album ‘Infinite’.
Eminem’s Rap Career
Infinite was a commercial failure. People said that it was because they didn’t like Eminem’s style and that he wasn’t cut out for hip-hop. But this didn’t stop him. He kept writing. Around this time, he created his rap persona, Slim Shady. Shady was a way for Eminem to express his anger through lyrics about rape, assault, and murder. During this time, he created Slim Shady EP. He competed in a rap battle, the 1997 Rap Olympics, and came second. This got the attention of an intern for Interscope Records, who passed on his EP to company CEO Jimmy Iovine.
Iovine passed the EP on to music industry giant, Dr. Dre, the founder of Aftermath Entertainment. They recorded music together and, after two years of hard work, Eminem released his debut album, Slim Shady LP. The LP debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and went on to win ‘Best Rap Album’ at the Grammy Music Awards in 2000. It also went on to win ‘Best Artist in a Music Video’ for ‘My Name Is’, at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. After that, he released Marshall Mathers LP in 2000, which is when his career took off.

He even won an Oscar for “Lose Yourself”, which was part of the soundtrack for ‘8 Mile’. Some of his biggest releases have included The Marshall Mathers LP (2000), The Eminem Show (2002), Encore (2004), Recovery (2010), and Slim Shady LP (1999).
