Scrabble Dictionary Adds Twerking And 6,500 Other Words To Its Dictionary

Scrabble released the newest version of their dictionary this week and it included 6,500 new words, including “emoji,” “FaceTime” and “twerking.” Yes, the famous board game will now include the dance that Miley Cyrus could not get enough of this past year.

The Collins Official Scrabble Words, which shows what words are allowed for international tournament play in Scrabble, added a number of slang terms used in text messages and social media. So, if you plan on playing Scrabble soon, “lolz,” “vape” and “sexting” are all official words now.

Helen Newstead, the head of language content at Collins, said: “Dictionaries have always included formal and informal English, but it used to be hard to find printed evidence of the use of slang words. Now people use slang in social media posts, tweets, blogs, comments, text messages — you name it — so there’s a host of evidence for informal varieties of English that simply didn’t exist before.”

We do use these words on a daily basis, so it does make sense to include them in Scrabble, but is anyone really playing Scrabble still?
