Early Life

Dwyane Douglas Johnson, aka The Rock, was born on 2 May 1972 in Hayward, California. His mother, Ata Johnson, and father, former professional wrestler Wayde Douglas Bowles aka Rocky Johnson, separated. When he was younger, Dwayne spent time with his mother’s family in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Dwayne’s mother is Samoan, while his father was a Black Nova Scottish with some Irish ancestry. His father and Tony Atlas were the first tag team champions in the history of WWE. His mother was adopted by pro wrestler Peter Maiva, and his grandmother made history as the first female pro wrestling promoter. Before making his way to the US, Dwayne went to Richmond Road primary school. Johnson went to a number of schools before he graduated from Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. As a teenager, he got into trouble and was arrested for check fraud, fighting, and theft.

Education

At the age of 17, he was suspended for two weeks and made headlines in the local newspaper. On the other hand, he excelled at football and helped the high school team play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. This is a national high school division famous for producing Olympic-level and professional wrestlers. Other than playing football, The Rock, Dwayne Johnson was also part of his high school track and field team as well as the wrestling teams. WIN magazine named the wrestling program as the best in the US. His success in football got him the attention of various NCAA Division I collegiate programs.

University Sporting Career

As a promising athlete, Johnson received a full athletic scholarship from the University of Miami, where he played defensive tackle. In 1991, he was part of the football team that won the third national championship out of five. He wasn’t the star player since he had tough competition from the likes of Warren Sapp, who became a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

With a dual major in Criminology and Psychology, he graduated with a Bachelor of General Studies degree in 1995. Johnson was also a top-tier student speaker in the Miami community. After graduating, Dwayne was signed by the Canadian Football League under the Calgary Stampeders.

Professional Wrestling Career

Unfortunately, The Rock Dwayne Johnson didn’t last long in football. This was the start of his professional career with the help of veteran wrestler Pat Patterson. His try-out matches were with the World Wrestling Federation, where he signed his contract in the summer of 1996.

Dwayne Johnson made his debut as Rocky Maivia, a combination of both his father and grandfather’s names. His fans hyped him as a third-generation wrestler and nicknamed him, The Blue Chipper. In 1997, Dwayne Johnson fought against Hunter Hearst Helmsley and won the Intercontinental Championship, but he lost it to Owen Hart in the same year.

This inspired him to change his name to The Rock. Johnson had a very successful career after that and went on to win a number of championships. Wrestling even helped him enter the film industry in Hollywood.

Acting Career
