Who is Richard Williams?

Richard Doe Williams Jr was born on February 14th, 1942, to Richard Williams and Julia Mae Metcalf in Shreveport, Louisiana. His family has remarked on how athletic he was as a young man but did not have much to say about his personal life. Williams did not have a personal relationship with his father, who left the family when he was young. King Richard promised to be a part of his children’s lives, which was something his father could not provide.

After graduating from high school, Williams moved to Michigan before settling in Compton, California. He encouraged his two daughters to play tennis at an early age. Williams and his wife, Oracena Brady, decided to take their two children out of school. Together, they chose to homeschool Venus and Serena Williams. They felt it was the right decision to maximize their practice time on public tennis courts.

In 1995, Williams moved his family to Florida. He wanted to enroll his children in Rick Macci’s Tennis Academy. However, their stay was short as Williams disagreed with how his daughters were being trained. Moving forward, Williams felt it was in his children’s best interest that he become their tennis coach.

His goal was simple: Williams wanted to make Serena and Venus Williams world tennis champions. Under his tutelage, daughter Serena Williams won the 1999 US Open singles title, and Venus won the 2000 Wimbledon Ladies Championship.

Key Facts about Richard Williams

  • Richard Williams chose tennis for his two daughters, Serena and Venus Williams, because of the lack of diversity in the sport. He felt they could become trailblazers in the sport and increase the prize money offered in women’s tennis tournaments.
  • No question, Williams wanted his daughters to become iconic tennis players in the sport. But at the same time, he wanted to consider a great father more than a great tennis coach.
  • King Richard had to protect Serena and Venus Williams from being harassed by Long Beach, California gangs while practicing at local public tennis courts. In fact, one gang member broke his nose after he repeatedly refused to leave during tennis lessons. Williams wrote about the encounter in his autobiographical book.
  • King Richard wrote a 78-page plan on how to make his two girls tennis champions before they were actually born. In fact, he showed the plan to renowned tennis instructor Rick Macci with hopes he would consider training them.
  • Williams rejected Nike’s first shoe deal offer to Venus Williams. The sporting goods company offered the family a reported $3 million deal to build their tennis brand around her. Many in the industry thought King Richard was foolish to decline the offer. Instead, Williams waited and negotiated a deal for his daughter with Reebok. The deal was worth five years/$12 million.

What is to Come for Richard Williams?

Recently, health issues have hindered Richard Williams’ opportunity to add to his net worth. He suffered a stroke in 2016 but was able to return to good health after extensive rehabilitation. Two years later, Williams suffered a series of mini-strokes. No one from his immediate family would provide an update on his current condition. But from all accounts, he is in stable condition. However, Williams has been seen publicly since sustaining those series of mini-strokes.
