Early Life

His father, Frederick Royal, was an entertainer and orchestra conductor who worked at MGM Studios based in Beverly Hills, California. Gibbons had a knack for music when he was five, and his passion sparked even further when his mother took him and his sister to see Elvis Presley. When he was seven years old, he joined his father in a BB King recording session; he was one of the greatest blues musicians of all time.

As Gibbons grew a bit older, his father wanted him to advance in music so he sent him to New York City to study with musician Tito Puente. On Gibbons’ 13th birthday, he was gifted with a sunburst Gibson Melody Maker and a Fender Champ amplifier. While attending Warner Brothers’ art school in Hollywood, California, at the age of 18, he formed a band called the Moving Sidewalks, they managed to compose a song called 99th Floor, along with several other singles and one full-length album. In that same period, Gibbons strikes a friendship with guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. Through this connection, the Moving Sidewalks received Hendrix’s approval and opened four dates for the Jimi Hendrix Experience during Hendrix’s first American headlining tour.

Career

After the Moving Sidewalks broke up, Gibbons formed the ZZ Top band in 1969. Other founding members include Dusty Hill as bassist and vocalist, and Frank Beard on drums, with Gibbons being the guitarist and vocalist for their newly formed blues rock band. In 1971, the band signed with London Records and released their first album called ZZ Top’s First Album.

From 1971 up to the present time, 2022, the band has released 15 studio albums, four live albums, seven compilation albums, and 44 singles. ZZ Top has sold over 50 million albums around the world; their classics include La Grange, Sharp Dressed Man, Tush, Cheap Sunglasses, and Gimme All Your Lovin’.
