2,505 Women Strip Down To Set New Guinness World Record

Thousands of Irish women have stripped down to set a new Guinness World Record – the most amount of people skinny dipping at once. The record the brave women were trying to beat was set in Western Australia in 2015, when 786 participants bared it all and swam naked to promote body positivity.

Guinness World Record official Lucia Sinigagliesi judged the attempted record break, and said that 2,505 women spent five minutes in the Irish Sea at Magheramore beach, 30 miles south of Ireland’s capital Dublin. During the record that was set in 2015, the temperature of the water was 23 degrees; double that of the most recent record.

The swim has been an annual event since it was started in 2013 by Dee Featherstone. Featherstone started the swim just weeks after having a mastectomy – removal of one or both breasts due to breast cancer. In the five years the event has been running, more than £135,000 has been raised – which doesn’t include the money that will be raised this year.

One of the participants, Deidre Betson, said “Oh my god it was amazing. I have never been naked in front of anybody before, except my husband, and it was brilliant and bracing. It was great craic. We are all different shapes and sizes and ages and it was just super.

The money raised from the event this year will go towards Aoibheann’s Pink Tie, a charity that was set up by Mick Rochford and Jimmy Norman in 2010 after Jimmy’s daughter Aoibheann passed away from cancer at the age of eight.

Aoibheann went to school with my daughter. She would have been seventeen this year. We did it in her memory,” said Betson.
