Instagram Opens Their First Content Portal, @Music

According to Tech Crunch, Instagram is about to launch a new community service that’s dedicated to music and musicians, which is known as “@Music.” This is the first time they’ve opened a site dedicated to a single subject. The fact that musicians own one-quarter of the accounts on Instagram has sparked this idea.

Founder and CEO, Kevin Systrom says, “The music community is — and always has been — an important part of Instagram.” Evidence of this lies in the fact that a lot of artists (e.g. Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Madonna, Rihanna, Taylor Swift) have Instagram accounts, as do many emerging artists.

Alex Suskind, Instagram’s Music Editor, will head up @Music, which will cover a variety of music topics. Specific hashtags are also being established, including #LocallySourced, #DoubleTrack, and #15SecondLessons. Instagram asks followers not only to comment but also collaborate on a new, music-themed hashtag project each month.

While the official launch occurred on April 29th, there’s much more to come as shown by the fact that community contributions are in the form of long-form content. Unfortunately, Instagram doesn’t have any plans to launch any other verticals like this. On the other hand, fortunately, they don’t plan on running ads on @Music either.
