Who is Bridget Fonda?

Bridget Fonda’s official name is Bridget Jane Fonda Elfman. Born on January 27, 1964, in Los Angeles, California. Fonda was born into a family of actors, including her maternal grandfather, Henry Fonda, who had a career of 50 years in the show business. Her father, Peter Fonda, was a two-time Golden Globe Awards winner and a prominent figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s supporting civil rights, anti-war, and others. Her aunt, Jane Fonda was a renowned actress of her generation—she was the recipient of various accolades, including two Academy Awards and seven Golden Globe Awards. Her mother, Susan Jane Brewer, is an artist.

Her parents divorced in 1974; the following year, her father married Portia Rebecca Crockett. Bridget Fonda, her younger brother Justin, and her older stepbrother Thomas McGuane Jr. were raised by her stepmother, Crockett. Her adolescent years were spent in the Coldwater Canyon section of Los Angeles and in Paradise Valley, south of Livingston, Montana. Fonda attended Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles, where she became involved with the theater in which she was cast in a school production of Harvey, a comedy play. From the involvement, Fonda became genuinely interested in acting and pursued her passion in college.

Bridget Fonda attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts acting program. As part of the school’s program, she studied method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. In 1986, Fonda earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Career

Bridget Fonda started acting when she was five in the 1969 drama film Easy Rider, written, produced, and starred by her father alongside another well-known actor, Dennis Hopper. Her first notable presence in the film industry was in the 1989 British historical drama, Scandal. Followed by the 1989 comedy Shag and the 1988 comedy You Can’t Hurry Love.

However, her breakthrough role was in the third installment of The Godfather Part III (1990), playing a journalist. Her standout performances and success of her films led Fonda to star in many more movies, including the 1993 action film Point of No Return—which was well-acclaimed, especially in an era when movies were predominantly filled with male heroes. In 1997, Fonda accidentally met Quentin Tarantino when they were on the same flight together, and he offered her a role in his 1997 crime film, Jackie Brown, starring alongside Hollywood notable actors such as Robert De Niro and Samuel L. Jackson. During the peak of her career, Bridget Fonda was offered an eponymous role in the television series Ally McBeal as the main cast, but she turned down the offer to focus on her film career. In 2001, Fonda starred with Jet Li in the action thriller Kiss of the Dragon—the film was well-acclaimed in Asia and by martial arts enthusiasts. Fonda’s final role in a film was in the 2001 romantic comedy The Whole Shebang. And her final role overall was in the 2002 TV movie Snow Queen.

In February 2003, Fonda had a serious car accident in which her Jaguar sports car flipped and crashed on a highway in Malibu, Los Angeles, which left her with a fractured vertebra. Many speculated the accident was the chief reason Fonda retired from acting. In less than a month after the accident, she announced her engagement to film composer and former Oingo Boingo music band frontman Danny Elfman.
