US Officially Takes Cuba Off List Of Countries That Sponsor Terrorism

The United States made a rather large move on Friday, in order to normalize relations with Cuba. The Obama administration announced it had lifted the classification of a “sponsor of terror” off the communist country. This was just another in what has been a long winding road towards opening trade and communication between the two countries.

While the United States has significant concerns and disagreements with a wide range of Cuba’s policies and actions, these fall outside the criteria relevant to the rescission of a state sponsor of terrorism designation,” Jeff Rathke, the State Department spokesman, said in a statement according to the New York Times.

Despite this move, relations are actually deteriorating between Cuba and the US over the last few months, since the two opened communications back up in December. Some rivals of the administration say this particular move is appeasing enemies of the country but others believe it could be a good faith gesture in order to jump-start negotiations.
