New Photos And Details For X-Men: Apocalypse Emerge

It’s only a matter of time before Avengers: Age of Ultron begins dominating movie theaters, but that won’t stop other studios from laying their groundwork. Fox still has the rights to the X-Men, and with Days of Future Past wrapped up, the focus has rightfully shifted to the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse. Eager fans will have to wait a while longer to see it, but the new information should ease the sting.

For starters, a number of set photos have begun making the rounds. Series mainstays Scott Summers and Jean Grey make appearances with their new actors, but more importantly there’s a clear look at a newcomer to the film, Jubilee. The comparison to her comic book counterpart isn’t exactly one-to-one, but the fact that she’s got a distinct and recognizable look goes a long way. The same applies to the shots of Kodi-Smit McPhee’s Nightcrawler — and while he looks less than enthused, it could simply point to a character that’s had a rough time. Whatever the case, his presence is always welcome.

Director Bryan Singer divulged several details to Empire about the upcoming movie. As the title implies, the team will go up against the ancient and mighty mutant known as Apocalypse, and the scale of the movie will reflect that; considering the scale of previous movies, it’s the setup for a major event if executed properly. The biggest wrinkle, of course, is that a portion of the movie will take place in 1983 — which would explain the shake-up in casting as well as give the audience a chance to meet new characters with old names. There’s no telling how this movie will affect the continuity of the franchise, but if it’s good enough, it might not matter in the long run.

X-Men: Apocalypse is currently slated for release on May 19th, 2016. With any luck, it’ll be Singer’s finest.
