Lawyer Asks Judge To Allow Trial By Combat In Court Case

A lawyer from Staten Island, New York, has asked a judge to allow him to settle a legal case against him by way of trial by combat. Richard A. Luthmann believes the case against him is entirely baseless and in the case that it isn’t dismissed by the court then he wants to resolve the matter with the medieval method.

It appears that Luthmann may have gotten the idea for his trial by combat request from the hit HBO television show Game of Thrones, which the lawyer admits he is a massive fan of. The series has seen several of its high profile characters resolve disputes and legal actions by battling it out in a ritualistic fight to the death.

They want to be absurd about what they’re trying to do, then I’ll give them back ridiculousness in kind,” Luthmann said, continuing “If these people want to insist on having it out, then we’ll have it out.”

Luthmann is also aware that he is risking his own life by asking the judge to allow a trial by combat, as he wrote in his request, “One of the inconveniences of this procedure is, that the party who institutes it must be willing, if required, to stake his life in support of his accusation.
