Gloucester Police Helping Heroin Addicts With Therapy Instead Of Arresting Them

The Gloucester Police Department is now taking a proactive stance against heroin. According to The Good News Network, the cops are currently offering rehabilitation to anyone who turns in their drugs to them. They also plan to start using the money that’s seized from drug dealers to buy Narcan (a medication that, when immediately administered, reverses overdoses) to give to addicts’ families in the hopes of saving lives.

Chief Leonard Campanello said that the difference in the way that society treats tobacco and heroin addicts is due to stigma and money. He says that these are “Petty reasons to lose a life.” Seeking support from Facebook followers, Lahey Hospital and Medical Center and Gloucester’s Addison Gilbert Hospital have already agreed to join with him in his efforts. He’s planning to go to Washington D.C. to garner support from the state’s senators (Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey) and their U.S. Rep. Seth W. Moulton as well.
