Court Battle Erupts Over Frozen Dog Sperm Worth $24,000


A furious court battle has broken out in Minnesota as two parties have entered legal proceedings to fight over control of eight vials of dog sperm. The row began when the breeder of Beau Lemon, an award winning show dog, had the animal neutered without informing the owners, preventing them from being able to breed the dog as they had intended.

Beau Lemon had previously won best of show twice amongst a variety of other awards and accolades, even went on to be recognized as the second best bichon frisé in America at one point. Owners Mary and John Wangsness spent thousands of dollars on training the show dog to competition standard and ensuring that it was well looked after. However, plans to breed the dog after its retirement were ruined by the breeder Vickie Halstead.

John Wangsness is now trying to sue Halstead for damages and to try to get control of the sperm being held at a veterinary clinic. “After hearing about the neutering, and I’m not overstating things at all, Mary literally cried and stayed in bed for three weeks,” said John Wangsness, whose wife past away in March. “She never bounced back.
