Couple’s Threat Of Divorce To Oppose Gay Marriage Backfires

A Christian couple from the Canberra area in Australia made a public statement earlier this week, stating that they would divorce if same-sex marriage becomes legal in the country. Their statement read: “My wife and I, as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognise the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnisation of same sex couples.

Since being published on The Canberra Times Facebook page on Tuesday, the article has gone viral, and has backfired. Thousands of social media users across the world have blasted the conservative couple’s threat to divorce should the gay community be allowed the same marital rights. Followers of popular online publications including the Huffington Post have bitten back at the couple, calling them narrow minded and intolerant. The couple’s ‘threat’ has gone global, hitting online and print newspapers across Australia, the US, Europe and Asia, but has not quite spread the message they were hoping for.

In a direct response, a gay Australian couple were interviewed by The Backburner on Thursday and gave their own promise “not to give a sh*t” if the Canberra couple divorced.
