Born to Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera, Steve Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Glenville High School in 1974. He would later attend Kent State University where he met fellow comedian Arsenio Hall before transferring to West Virginia University.
