Colin Kelly Jost is an American comedian, actor, and writer. Dr. Kerry Kelly, Colin’s mother, was among the first doctors to join the New York City Fire Department in 1981. Daniel A Jost, Colin A Jost’s father, was a Staten Island Technical High School teacher. The family resided in Staten Island, New York, where he was born. He became interested in comedy and writing as a youth. He and his brother were raised as Roman Catholics. After graduating from Regis High School, he was granted admission to Harvard University.

Jost began his career as the editorial director of the school newspaper, The Owl. After graduating, Jost then worked as a reporter and copy editor for the Staten Island Advance. Jost was later employed as a writer for the brief Kappa Mikey cartoon series on Nickelodeon. After quitting that post, he emailed NBC’s Saturday Night Live a writing sample, and they hired him as a writer in 2005. 

Jost oversaw SNL’s scripting from 2009 to 2012. From 2012 to 2015, he served as co-head writer; in late 2017, he was reinstated. He frequently works with Rob Klei, another co-head writer for SNL.

Executive producer Lorne Michaels asked Jost if he could perform the Weekend Update feature over the summer break after the 2012–2013 season because co-anchor Seth Meyers would shortly be leaving to helm Late Night with Seth Meyers. On the March 1, 2014, show, Meyers accepted and was replaced by Jost. On the Jason Sudeikis-hosted show from October 23, 2021, Jost later surpassed Meyers’ record for the most extended anchor in the program’s history. 

He was hired as an essayist on SNL in 2005 after graduating. From 2009 through 2012, he later served as SNL’s composing director. He took over as a co-head essayist from 2012 to 2015 after that.
