She Married Her Cat to Spite Her Landlord!
To what lengths would you go to protect your four-legged friend?
For many of us, our furry pals become almost like family. We talk to them, play with them, and confide in them during our times of need and longing. And yet, few, if any, of us have married our cat to stop a landlord from forcing eviction.
Recently, Deborah Hodge, 49, did precisely that. Over the past few years, Ms. Hodge was forced by landlords to rehome a total of three pets to avoid eviction herself. But when it came to her latest feline, India, rehoming was out of the cards.
That’s when her bright idea struck. They would marry!
After all, what type of human being would kick out a married woman and her new life partner? At least, that’s what Ms. Hodge thought to herself when she ultimately decided to marry her cat, India.
In this situation, Hodge donned a tuxedo, including a white dress shirt and intricate black bowtie, then tied the knot with India during a respectable civil ceremony overseen by a personal family friend, who happened to be legally ordained.
Wrapped in elegant gold for the wedding day, India mowed throughout the entire process. In the crowd, Deborah’s friends and family from throughout the U.K. sat comfortably in a southeast London public park to witness the shocking and, frankly, quite odd marriage ceremony occur.
Deborah had this to say about the whole ordeal:
“She is fundamentally the most important thing in my life after my children. By marrying India, I need any future landlords to know that we come as a package, and we cannot be separated under any circumstances as she is as important to me as the children. I refuse to be parted with her. I’d rather live on the streets than be without her.”
If past scandals with her pets, all of which involved rehoming, she said:
“It absolutely broke my heart. Your pets become part of your family, and it was just absolutely devastating having to say goodbye to them.”
It appears this story does include a happy-ever-after, though. After the marriage ceremony and numerous emails back and forth, her current landlord allowed India to remain with the family in his apartment building.
