On February 7, 1962, Troyal Garth Brooks took his first breath. He was the first-born child of his father, Troyal Raymond Brooks, and his mother, Colleen McElroy Carroll. The family home was located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He gets his singing genes from his mother, a country music singer. She appeared on television in the 1950s in a show called Ozark Jubilee. Garth’s parents were previously divorced, and he has older step-siblings. His 4 older brothers and older sister were all performers who put on a show for their parents each week while growing up.

Garth Brooks was an avid athlete; a music career was furthest from his mind as he participated in baseball, football, and track and field events. His performances on the athletics field were such that he was awarded a scholarship to Oklahoma State University, where he competed in Javelin.

Brooks has received many country music hall awards, starting in the mid-1980s. 

In 1985, Garth Brooks toured the local clubs and bars, singing and playing guitar. He was discovered by an attorney familiar with the entertainment industry and accepted an offer to produce a demo tape.

His first visit to Nashville ended in failure, but he was convinced to return. In 1987, he moved to Nashville with his family to start his country music career in earnest.

By the end of 1989, he had achieved number 2 on the country album charts with his Hungry Years album. This album included his hit song If Tomorrow Never Comes.
