300 Pound Pitcher Takes Mound And Internet By Storm
If you were following college football in the ’90’s you probably remember the University of Kentucky’s Jared Lorenzen. The quarterback was heavier than most offensive lineman and had a gun for an arm. Now, St. Thomas Bobcat pitcher Ben Ancheff is trying to walk in Lorenzen’s shoes as he led his NAIA division college team to the college baseball world series. Officially listed as 6’2″ and 300 pounds even, the young man is also considered one of the better pitchers on a staff that now qualifies as one of the best in the NAIA college ranks.
This certainly isn’t the first time that a massively overweight athlete has taken the field. Lorenzen was the standard bearer and became known as the “Hefty Lefty.” Baseball is also not a sport that generally needs supercut athletes to play it. Still, this 300-pound behemoth is easily the heaviest pitcher in college baseball today and has grabbed the Internet by storm because of it. In his last outing of the year, according to Bleacher Report, he pitched a little over four innings and allowed just one run. His outing was brief not because he got winded, but because he’s still recovering from Tommy John surgery the year before. Here’s hoping Ancheff gets a shot to play his trade and show off his heft at the next level.
