Recently, New Zealand held an online competition in order to find a new flag for the island nation. The competition saw some truly bizarre entries, and the end result was the country keeping their original flag. Creating a great flag can be harder than most people expect, which is why a lot of countries just use a couple of colors and stripes while symbolically attaching meaning to those elements. Some countries, however, try to be bold while creating their flags, and these can have quite a unique appeal. This list features 10 flags from around the world that have tried to use some strange details to make their flags stand out:

Wales Flag

The flag of Wales uses a red dragon as its premier element, making it look like a flag from mythical times. The dragon is used to refer to King Cadwaladr, a man who ruled Wales in the 7th Century.

Nepal Flag

Can you tell that there is something different about this flag? Nepal is the only country in the world to use a flag that is non-quadrilateral.

Virgin Islands Flag

This flag looks similar to the US coat of arms, except for the Eagle clutching three arrows, as if it just got the best of some hunter.

Isle Of Man Flag

No this is not the flag for the national marathon association, it is in fact the flag of the Isle of Man in Great Britain. The symbol used in the center of the flag is called the triskelion.

Cambodia Flag

The flag of Cambodia is probably the only one in the world that uses a building as its primary image. The building used on the flag is an iconic structure named Angkor Wat.

Libya Fla

Libya used this flag between 1977 and 2011. Until it changed the design of its national flag, Libya was the only country in the world to use a flag with only color and no designs at all.

Old Benin Flag

This is not Benin’s current flag, but a flag used during the Colonial days. This flag is pretty much the most violent and ruthless one in the world. A man is being beheaded in the image, while there is red all around. Pretty scary stuff!

Turkmenistan Flag

The flag of Turkmenistan is considered to be the most detailed flag in the world. Apart from the crescent moon and five stars, the flag features an intricate carpet design on the left that is supposed to represent the five major tribes of the region.

Gibraltar’s Flag

This distinct flag belongs to Gibraltar. It uses a three-towered red castle to refer to the Kingdom of Castile, while the key is supposed to signify the fact that Gibraltar is considered the entrance to the Mediterranean.
