Woman Said She Can’t Afford An Ambulance After Getting Leg Trapped By Train

Last week, a woman exiting a train from the Orange Line in Boston slipped and became trapped between the train and the platform. Transit police say the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, stopped into a 5-inch gap when she was exiting the train at Massachusetts Avenue station on Friday afternoon.

Security footage from the station showed a crowd gathering around the woman, and pushed the train far enough for the woman to be pulled to safety. The woman suffered a deep cut on her thigh, which was deep enough to expose the bone, however told people not to call an ambulance because she couldn’t afford it.

Marleny Polanco was sitting in her car when she heard the woman’s screams, “I didn’t actually see her fall. I actually jumped out of the car when I heard some screams. I was able to see what was happening. She was clearly stuck between the train and the platform,” Polanco said, adding “She made it a point to say ‘you don’t understand, I have terrible insurance.’ Everyone just kept saying don’t worry about that, you need medical help.”

EMTs arrived at the scene five or ten minutes later, with the woman agreeing to go with them. The woman’s leg was bandaged up by the EMTs and she was taken away in a wheelchair. “She couldn’t walk, she couldn’t stand, she couldn’t do anything on the leg,” Polanco said.

An incident report showed that the woman was taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment, and didn’t suffer any broken bones, however did need surgery.
