This Cyclist’s Crash May Have Actually Saved His Life

The Guardsman’s Pass in the Tour of Utah is a hairpin turn that definitely needs to be recognized as a hazard for 2016. Unfortunately this year, an eager Matt Brammeier didn’t notice the sharp turn and approached at an incredibly high speed. Spectators and race officials immediately attempted to warn following cyclists to the danger, but weren’t quick enough as two more suffered similar, but not as severe, crashes.

The interesting thing about Brammeier’s crash was that he was not only travelling too fast to make the turn, but also probably too fast to stay on the road at all, which would surely have see him careen off the side of the cliff the road was turning to avoid. While injured quite severely, the car Brammeier hit likely saved his life by preventing him from speeding off the cliff to what would have been potentially fatal injuries.
