Pregnant Woman Shot Dead After Refusing to Stand While Singing

24 year old singer Samina Samoon (AKA Samina Sindhu) was singing at a ceremony near Larkana, Pakistan, on Tuesday when Tarique Ahmed Jatoi asked the woman to stand while she was singing.

Jatoi, who was allegedly drunk at the ceremony, shot Samoon for refusing to stand. Samoon was rushed to Chandka Hospital, however both her and her baby were pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Samoon’s husband, who was the father of the unborn child pleaded with police that both Jatoi and two of his accomplices should be charged with two counts of murder – for both Samoon and her unborn child.

Artists who were friends with Samoon protested that the man responsible for the shooting had not been arrested, resulting in many of the protesters being arrested – which did not include Jatoi. The protesters were talking to local media outlets and demanded that the police station’s Station House Officer (SHO) be removed and that an independent investigation be opened. Shortly after, Larkana’s Senior Superintendent of Police suspended Liaquat Ali Khajar (the current SHO) and assigned another SHO.

Tarique Ahmed Jatoi has since been arrested, and an investigation has been launched.
