It’s Now Raining Spiders In Australia

Although drought-stricken Australia can use all the rain it can get, something other than precipitation has recently fallen from the sky. Millions of spiders rained down on a rural town forming a few hundred meters of webs in the sky. According to Martyn Robinson, a naturalist from the Australian Museum, “The onslaught of spiders can be explained by a migration technique called ‘ballooning.'” This is when baby spiders climb up to the top of the trees and release streams of silk that are then picked up by the breeze. In this case, the winds carried some spiders as far as 1.8 miles.
