Donald Trump Says Summit With Kim Jong-un Is Back On

President Donald Trump recently wrote a letter to North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, stating that the meeting that was scheduled for June 12th should be canceled. In the letter, Trump said “Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting.

North Korean official Kim Yong Chol, who was sanctioned over the 2014 Sony cyberattack, met Donald Trump in the oval office on Friday and delivered a letter from Kim Jong-un. In the letter, Kim stated that he would like to continue with the plans to meet in Singapore on June 12th.

Trump has told reporters that he doesn’t believe the meeting will lead to an agreement regarding the denuclearization of North Korea, however he does think a framework will develop “over a period of time.” When Trump was asked if Kim wants denuclearization, Trump said “I do think so. He’d like to see it happen. He wants to be careful. I look forward to the day when I can take the sanctions off.”

The talks between Trump and Kim are a step forward to a peaceful future, however there’s currently no guarantee that the talks will take place. We’re hoping they do, and they lead to a positive outcome for both nations.
