Coach’s Comment Could Have Spurred High School Players To Attack Referee

By now you’ve likely seen the video of the two San Antonio high school football players that targeted a referee in a game last week. New reports are surfacing that have led school officials of John Jay High to believe the players were acting on comments made by one of the team’s assistant coaches.

According to reports, assistant coach Mack Breed said that “this guy needs to pay for cheating us” just moments before the two players took turns “tackling” the referee. The school says that since the comments came to light, they have put Breed on administrative leave. The school district said Breed’s “suggestion was inappropriate and could have led to the incident.

This is just the latest side effect from an incident that many in and around football have said they have never seen before. The two students are currently on suspension and could face expulsion from the school. Since fallout began, there have also been implications that the referee was using racial epithets towards a number of players in the game.
