British Rock Fans Call Kanye West An Insult To Music

One man’s frustration over the announcement that Kanye West will headline Saturday night at the Glastonbury Festival has erupted into an outrage as over 75,000 people sign his petition to cancel West’s slot.

Neil Lonsdale, who started the petition as a joke, never expected anyone would take it as seriously as they have. Now he has thousands of rock fans standing with him in agreement that Glastonbury should choose a rock group to headline instead.

Previous headliners have included such big rock names as The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen, but this isn’t the first time Glastonbury’s choice of headliners has caused an uproar. Fans were similarly upset when Jay-Z was booked for the event in 2008, causing many to speculate that this is nothing more than a battle against rap music in general.

In a recent interview, Lonsdale insists that he has nothing against rap music but said that “Glastonbury needs upbeat major artists. Glastonbury is an institution. It is expected that it has the biggest names. The biggest performers. Kanye does not represent that.” According to Lonsdale, West does not “represent anything. His songs are lyrically appalling.

While it’s highly unlikely that this petition will change anything, rock fans can take comfort in knowing that the Foo Fighters have confirmed that they will be headlining Friday night.
