Woman Hospitalized After Being Bitten By Black Widow Spider Hiding In Her Bag Of Grapes

A black widow spider that was hiding in a bag of grapes has bitten a 21-year-old woman who is now hospitalized. The young lady’s mother explained that her daughter reached into a bag of produce bought from a local supermarket in Vermont and the spider crawled up her arm and bit her. After being taken to the hospital, it was confirmed that the spider was the venomous black widow.

According to People, the supermarket, now confirmed to be Shaw’s in Colchester, released a statement following the incident: “The health and safety of products we sell, and our customers, is our first concern. We have been closely monitoring the situation and [have] been in contact with the family. We replaced [the] product in the customer’s refrigerator as a precaution and took immediate action to inspect the product at the customer’s store. We also are inspecting the product in all of our stores and have been in touch with the supplier, which has an extensive food safety management system in place.
