Virginia Restaurant Ridicules 17-Year-Old Boy Who Paid In Quarters

Cohen Naulty, 17, took his friends to Beer 88 in Lynchburg, Virginia, and has been mocked by the restaurant’s Facebook page after how he paid.

Naulty paid the $35 bill with a $20 note, and another $25 in quarters – leaving a generous $10 tip. Despite this 30% tip, he was mocked by Beer 88’s Facebook page, which read;

“We’ll just caption this…”How NOT to pay a restaurant”, cause that’s the nicest thing we can think to say about this ridiculousness. #wearebeer88notcoinstar #anybodyneedchange #nohometraining #atleasttheyleftatip #workingwiththepublic

Naulty has responded to this post, saying he carries a lot of coins because he works as a server in another restaurant and people often leave tips in quarters. Naulty took his friends to a different restaurant, used tips he received from working to pay for his food and his friends’ food, and got slammed because how he paid.

After Beer 88 posted this on Facebook, plenty of people hit back at the restaurant for shaming and ridiculing a kid for doing something nice. Beer 88 have since deleted their entire Facebook page.

Joshua Spencer wrote; “Not only did they pay, they left a 30% tip. The kid is a server at another restaurant. He paid with his tip money. It spends just like anything else. Their ‘apology’ was almost as asinine as their original post. Even if it was a joke, you don’t mock a customer in order to do so. Ignorance.”

Another Facebook user, Katie Wilson, said; “Beer 88 should not be posting anything having to do with customers paying. Money is money. He left a larger tip than most. No need to post this sort of backdrop slam at the customer.”

Before Beer 88 deleted their entire Facebook page, they left an ‘apology’, which read;

In response to our earlier post, it was posted as a joke, intended as a joke and should be taken as a joke. It was posted as a light-hearted way of saying that something like this can be annoying to people that work in the restaurant/retail industry. In no way did we publicly shame ANYONE for paying OR tipping. We try to keep our page funny and relatable. And had no idea that this would be offensive to anyone,

The owner of Beer 88, Yao Liu, caught wind of what was posted on the business’s Facebook page, however has stated that she isn’t the person who handles the social media portion of the restaurant. “On that part, yes, I do apologize. Because, you know, I didn’t see it.”

After learning of this incident, nearby restaurant Braubergers said that they will hold a special night where customers can pay in change, and if they do so they will receive a discount. They also said that 20% of the revenue generated on the night will be donated to charity.
