UK Government Rejects Cannabis Legalization Despite 200,000 Signatures

The United Kingdom government has officially responded to a petition, which was signed by over 204,000 people, for the “production, sale, and usage of cannabis” to be completely legalized. The author of the petition, James Owen, is arguing that the laws are draconian, and that it could bring in around £900 million in taxes per year, save £400 million in policing per year, and create around 10,000 new jobs.

A government spokesperson has said: “Substantial scientific evidence shows cannabis is a harmful drug that can damage human health. There are no plans to legalize cannabis as it would not address the harm to individuals and communities.”

Clark French, a cannabis activity and founder of the United Patients Alliance, responded: “The governments response is embarrassingly out of date with science, Prohibition fails to protect the vulnerable and often leaves patients forced to go to the black market. Cannabis has been proven to be a medicine. It is a dishonest government that continues to deny people legal access to cannabis and its therapeutic potential.”

More people will probably get a little bit upset when they hear about the government’s decision.
