U.S. Deputy Marshal Gunned Down In The Line Of Duty


According to an ABC affiliate report, U. S. Deputy Marshal Josie Wells was killed in the line of duty near Baton Rouge, Louisiana on March 10th, 2015. The shooting occurred at the Elm Grove Motel in Point Coupee Parish. Wells, 27, was attempting to serve a warrant for the arrest of a suspect who was considered armed and dangerous in Scotlandville. The suspect allegedly committed a double murder the day after Mardi Gras ended.

Wells’ partner transported him immediately to a nearby hospital, but he died shortly after arrival. The suspect involved in this shooting was Mr. Jamie Crooms, 31. He was the alleged shooter when a brother and sister were gunned down outside a nightclub on February 18th, 2015. Undisclosed federal charges are associated with this double homicide. Mr. Crooms was also injured during the firefight. His condition was listed as critical at Our Lady of the Lake hospital.

U. S. Marshal Wells was assigned to the Southern District Office in Mississippi. He was working temporarily in Louisiana with the U.S. Fugitive Task Force. The U. S. Marshal’s Office provided the following statement:

“Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells died in the line of duty in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Deputy Marshal Wells was part of a team executing a warrant on a fugitive wanted for double homicide. The team engaged gunfire and Wells was shot. He was immediately transported to an area hospital, where he died. The fugitive was also shot and transported to a hospital. The shooting investigation is being led by the FBI and Baton Rouge Police Department. No other law enforcement personnel were injured during this incident.”
