Top-Knot Hairstyles Are Making Men Go Bald

Long hairstyles for men weren’t always smiled upon, but as time goes on, so too do the demands of fashion. Now it’s possible for anyone to wear any number of styles, assuming they can wear them well. But hair brings with it certain responsibilities — and in some cases, even risks.

Top-knots — or man buns, in some circles — have gained some traction, but they may do more harm than good. The problem with them is that by forcing the hair into such a tight knot, it pulls at the roots around the forehead and temples. When done over a long period of time, it causes a condition called traction alopecia, and makes bald spots appear. Alternatively, the hairstyle simply does irreparable damage to the roots and follicles; the end result is that hair stops growing entirely.

Luckily, there are some saving graces. Traction alopecia is a condition that can result, but it’s not guaranteed. More to the point, the problem comes from too much stress on the hair — which means that if the wearer decides to don a looser bun, then it can relieve the stress while maintaining the style. Given what a top-knot could do, it’s a small price to pay for the sake of fashion.
