No matter what genre of music one prefers, they are sure to be familiar with and admire Lionel Richie.  He is a famous songwriter who has had his songs recorded by many adored singers in their own right, such as Kenny Rogers.  In addition to that, he is an incredible singer and performer with four Grammy Awards and many other accolades.

Early Life of Lionel Richie

Lionel was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on June 20, 1949.  His dad was a systems analyst in the U.S. Army.  Lionel Brockman Richie Sr. went on to marry Alberta R. Foster, who was a school teacher.  Lionel Richie effectively grew up on the Tuskegee Institute’s campus. 

Lionel later graduated from the Institute after earning a Bachelor’s degree in the field of economics.  This was also the place where he formed an array of R&B bands.  Then in 1968, Lionel Richie joined the Commodores as its saxophonist and massively-talented lead singer.  They signed their initial recording contract with Atlantic Records.  Later they moved to Motown Records and opened for The Jackson 5.

As their status in the music industry blossomed, Richie also wrote romantic ballads that became huge hits for the band.  In 1982, he made the leap into a full solo artist.  He is still wildly popular worldwide with at least two Grammy Awards and a Golden Globe Award to his name, and he is considered one of the most successful singer-songwriters in history.

Lionel Richie’s Personal Life

Lionel was married to his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey in October 1975.  They would adopt Nicole Camille Escovedo, aka Nicole Richie, when she was 9 years old.  Before that, they had informally adopted her and raised her as their own daughter.  In 1993, Richie and Harvey got divorced. 

In December 1995, Lionel married Diane Alexander.  Together they had one son named Miles Brockman Richie, and one daughter named Sofia Richie.  That union broke up in 2004.  In 2008, Nicole Richie and beau Joel Madden gave Lionel a granddaughter and a second grandchild in 2009. 

Notable Career Achievements of Lionel Richie

Richie had many albums, including Dancing on the Ceiling and Tuskegee.  Headlining tours were highly grossing events such as All the Hits, All Night Long Tour were huge successes.  Lionel also did some voice acting work as well as physical appearances on television and in films.

In 2018, he became a judge on American Idol and is still doing that today.  He has won many major awards, and his recordings continue to draw new fans and sell.  Then, of course, there are all the songs he has written for which he is paid royalties.  The music industry is far better off today for Lionel Richie having been a part of it.
