Pro Surfer Breaks His Neck And Survives

Sports are a chance for entertainment and excitement, but there’s an understood level of danger to them. Football players and wrestlers by the dozen know that, and they’re arguably the lucky ones; they at least have solid ground below them and don’t have to worry about drowning. Surfers don’t have the same luxury — and yet one pro managed to prove that riding the waves doesn’t have to be a death wish.

Shawn Dollar took to California’s coast to do some surfing, but a stroke of bad luck left him in a dire situation: he crashed into a massive boulder and had his neck broken in four places. That should have been the end of him, yet he made it out alive; he had to swim back to the coast despite rocks that boxed him in, and then walked a mile with a friend to reach his car. Against all odds, he made it safely to the hospital.

Dollar has a long recovery ahead of him, and he won’t be doing much in the way of moving for a while, but the good news is that he didn’t suffer from any form of paralysis. In fact, he’s lucky enough to have avoided permanent loss of mobility. Chances are high that he’ll be back on his board eventually, but for now he can take solace in his family’s support.
