Meat Eating Rainbow Birds Will Ruin Your Day

It should come as no surprise to you that this latest display of “damn nature you scary” comes from Australia, the home of quite a few of the world’s most dangerous animals. The Rainbow Lorikeet, at first glance, is much like a hummingbird in its main eating habits. They consume a variety of nectars and pollen from assorted flowers and plants. However, a new discovery of these vibrant birds shows that they have taken to eating meat.

Bird expert Professor Darryl Jones of Griffith University in Queensland, Australia expressed complete shock when he discovered this odd occurrence. He discovered this quirky behavior on his own property when he noticed that, despite a variety of foods being offered, the Lorikeets were defending and eating the meat he had set out for other meat-eating birds. Professor Jones speculates that these birds might be craving protein. However, perhaps the meat eating is responsible for the increase in Lorikeet numbers over the past 10 years? Jones says this once mere common bird species has become the largest of bird species in the southeast. Whatever the cause, everyone can agree on one thing; this is not normal Lorikeet behavior and now we should find out why.
