Man Commits Suicide After Wounding 3 With Sniper

On May 4th, Rex Whitemire Harbour, a 26-year-old former student of the University of Georgia, decided to use a sniper to shoot at vehicles travelling along a highway in Northern Georgia. Harbour was allegedly influenced by Nikolas Cruz, the individual responsible for the mass shooting in Parkland Florida in February.

Derreck Booth, a spokseman for Hall County Sheriff’s Office said “The incident unfolded on May 4 shortly before 11:50 a.m. Hall County 911 received a call from a motorist traveling on Ga. 365 who said her husband had been shot as they were heading north near Tribble Gap Road in the northeast portion of the county.” Booth said, adding “additional callers reported hearing gunshots and advised that other vehicles had been struck by bullets in the same vicinity.

In total, Harbour shot at seven vehicles travelling along the highway, and injured three people. The victims included a 54-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his him, a 74-year-old man who was shot in his leg, and a 49-year-old woman who was injured by glass after Harbour shot her windshield.

Harbour was shooting from a clearing near the highway, and a trail camera – which are used to track deer movements – captured images of Harbour walking to his vantage point. Harbour had two gun holsters under his shirt, and a search of his vehicle revealed three 9mm handguns, a .22 caliber rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a BB gun and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities pursued Harbour, who then allegedly shot himself, and was flown via helicopter to a nearby hospital. While en route to the hospital, Harbour died. All weapons are reported to have been obtained legally, and police stated that Harbour had no criminal record or a violent history.
