Heroic Man Saves Dog From 100 Foot Fall

A man in Brazil has been crowned a hero after he broke the fall of a Shih Tzu when it fell almost 100 feet from a balcony on the ninth-floor of an apartment building.

Joao Augusto spotted the dog – Mel – on his neighbors balcony, barking and climbing the railing. Augusto rushed downstairs to the ground floor and stood under the balcony in the hopes of catching Mel if she fell from the balcony. In the video, recorded by a security camera, Augusto can be seen gauging where the dog is going to land if it fell, constantly looking up and repositioning himself.

Thankfully Augusto’s efforts paid off. While he didn’t catch Mel, he sure did break her fall, and she can be seen running off frame moments after reaching the ground.

Speaking with local reporters, Augusto said;

“I asked for a towel or a sheet to help in some way, but there wasn’t enough time. Then, she fell from the ninth floor. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to catch her but I was aware that I could cushion the fall.

I was on the floor for a few seconds but it was from relief. I think that I was in the right place at the right time. I did what I could, the most I could to help. It was a joint effort with the caretaker who acted quickly to help the dog. It was a happy ending.”

It has been confirmed that neither Mel or Augusto were injured, and Mel’s owner has installed netting on the balcony to ensure this incident doesn’t happen again.
