Giant Lenin Head Unearthed After Being Buried For 24 Years

Workers have uncovered a giant head of Lenin in Berlin, Germany, that was once part of a large statue of the Russian revolutionary leader. The head was dug up after a campaign by historians to find it as they feel it is an important historical structure that should be on display rather than buried underground.

The original statue, which stood some 19 meters high, was erected in Berlin during the time that Russia effectively controlled half of the city. However, following the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German government ordered that the statue should be brought down, leading to it being completely dismantled and the separate parts buried in a small secluded forest on the border of Berlin. It is from this forest location that workers have excavated the head, although they have left the other parts of the statue buried.

An operation is now under way to transport the portrayal of Lenin to the Spandau Citadelle museum in west Berlin were it will be included in a special exhibition about German monuments. Though it won’t be easy to move as the head weighs 3.5 tonnes.
