Village in Thailand Erects Pornographic Clay Sculptures to Anger Rain God

Villagers from the small town of Baan Na Trakut, Thailand hope to end a devastating drought by angering the rain spirit. To do this, they’ve erected life-sized clay sculptures of three people getting naughty. The logic? The rain god will be so incensed and embarrassed by the sandy sex scene, he’ll make it rain to wash away the pornographic display.

To the right, “Miss Rain” and “Mr. Fog” have sex, while “Mr. Cloud” watches on the left with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

This isn’t the only rain-making tradition in Thailand. Others include a cat parade and a rocket-launching ceremony. The travel magazine Thaiways explains why these ceremonies are important to the rural Thailand population:

Thailand is an agricultural country. Most Thai people in the rural areas grow crops especially rice for a living. Their fate inevitably depends on the falling of rain that will give life and freshness to their crops. The farmers will greatly suffer if there is drought. So they turn to have faith in beliefs that can alleviate their worry, prolong their hope and give inspiration to them. That is why there are various kinds of ceremonies of praying for plenty of rainfall, different in forms from region to region.
