Ursula The Octopus Needs Tougher Puzzles, Hers Are Too Easy

What may seem something out of a story book, Ursula the two year-old octopus is capable of dismantling Lego buildings, unscrewing lids and even unfastening catches. The octopuses keepers are seeking individuals to create puzzles, which will hopefully be challenging to this octopus. Ursula lives at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coast zoo and aquarium.

Her keepers are seeking puzzles which will challenge the octopus, which use non-metallic and non-toxic materials, which have no sharp or pointed edges. The person who can come up with the best puzzle will be invited to meet both the octopus and the keepers.

Ursula is a fully-developed octopus, with her keepers believing she will die of old age in the coming winter. What’s fascinating about the average octopus is that they can distinguish the orientation, shape, size and brightness of an object. Many are able to camouflage themselves and they have three hearts.
