Could This Be The Last Photo of a Male Northern White Rhino?
The world’s last male northern white rhinoceros, Sudan, is gravely ill with a deep wound on this right hind leg. There are only three northern white rhinos left, and Sudan lives with the remaining females, Fatu and Najin, at the Ol Pejeta Consevancy in Kenya. Unfortunately, both of the remaining females are unable to become pregnant, so it’s likely that these rhinos will be the last of their kind.
In the 1960’s there were more than 2,000 northern white rhinos, however due to poachers slaughtering them for their horns – which are believed to have mystical healing powers – their numbers have fallen drastically to today’s numbers; three left in the entire world. Their horns fetch a staggering $50,000 per kilogram.
We’re hoping Sudan gets better soon, as funds are being raised to implant Najin via in-vitro fertilization so the species doesn’t go extinct. Funds are being raised in various ways to pay for the $11.5 million fertility treatment – including Sudan having a Tinder profile!
