New Jersey Mayor Shuts Down Town For Incoming Traffic After Town Hits Capacity

A town in New Jersey was shut down over the weekend, as Mayor Matt Doherty announced on Twitter that Belmar reached capacity and incoming traffic was stopped from entering. Yes, a whole town was blocked from any new visitors because of being at capacity!

Doherty said, “We have our 29th seafood festival along with the day being a perfect 10 weather wise. We really reached our capacity, so we started to shut down people coming into town.” The 1.6 square mile beach town has a population of about 6,000, but it soars to 60,000 people during the summer.

After speaking with police, Doherty decided it was best to shut down the city to any new visitors for public safety reasons. The ban was only for visitors of the town, as full-time residents could have shown police their license and would have been allowed through.

Belmar was shut down for about four hours, as the ban started about 3pm EST and Doherty sent out a second tweet around 7pm EST stating the entrances to the city were open again.
