Martin Shkreli Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison

Martin Shkreli, the notorious pharma bro responsible for raising the price of Daraprim by more than 5,000 percent, has been convicted of securities fraud related to two hedge funds he operated and the drug company Turing Pharmaceuticals. Shkreli made a sob-filled plea for leniency on Friday, but ended up getting seven years in prison.

“The one person to blame for me being here today is me. Not the government. There is no conspiracy to take down Martin Shkreli. I took down Martin Shkreli with my disgraceful and shameful actions. This is my fault. I am no victim here” Shkreli said.

Interestingly enough, Shkreli’s defense lawyers asked for an 18-month maximum sentence, however the sentence Shkreli received was slightly less than half of the minimum term that prosecutors were seeking of 15 years. Along with the sentence Shkreli received, he also has to forfeit nearly $7.4 million to the federal government. Once Shkreli receives probation, he will no longer be able to have an executive position in a company, or become a company’s director, and will not be allowed to hold a majority stake in a company.
