Lucille Ball Statue In Hometown Drawing Fire

A statue that was meant to be a tribute to the late, great Lucille Ball has instead drawn quite a bit of fire since it was first unveiled in 2009. The statue, erected in the actress’ hometown of Celoron, New York has gotten so many complaints – especially of late – it has led to the artist who made it to apologize. Dave Poulin is so embarrassed by the way the statue looks in fact, he’s agreed to redo it for free.

NPR reports the city might not take him up on his offer, as there have been some in town who want to turn to a new artists in order to get the tribute right. Poulin apparently wants to make things right, as he’s written an open letter to the town where he says “I take full responsibility for ‘Scary Lucy,‘ ” he said, adding that he didn’t mean “to disparage in any way the memories of the iconic Lucy image.”

While Poulin has admitted that the work wasn’t up to par for him, he added that he finds the town’s reaction to the statue a bit surprising. The artist apparently donated the spooky visage to the town for free and he’s a bit perplexed that Celeron is now wanting him to take the time to redo it, at his own expense. This might not be the last we’ve heard of the ‘Spooky Lucy’ statue just yet.
