Mexican auteur Guillermo del Toro is very much akin to household name Steven Spielberg, capable of both raucous blockbusters – like the Hellboy movies – as well as deeply beautiful and profound cinematic masterpieces – like Pan’s Labyrinth. For his latest directorial venture, del Toro seems to have decided to mix his love of campiness with his eye for dark beauty to create this sexy new horror film, Crimson Peak.

The film stars 2010’s Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska as Edith Cushing, a young author would become enthralled in a romance with a mysterious stranger; Sir Thomas Sharpe, played by The Avengers‘ Tom Hiddleston. Once they marry, they move to his massive rural mansion with his sister Lady Lucille Sharpe, played by Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain, but Edith soon realizes that this new husband, new house, and new life are not what they appear to be. After an early screening of the film, infamous horror author Stephen King called it “gorgeous and just f***ing terrifying.” The film is due in theaters on October 16th of this year.
