Fancy Dress Funeral Sees Darth Vader Lead Service

A funeral in Bedfordshire has raised a few eyebrows and caused something of a stir, largely because of the fact that the service was led by Darth Vader. While funerals can often by very sad occasions, where people mourn the passing of a loved one, this particular service was far from conventional.

More than 100 people attended the funeral and many of the friends and family who were there were dressed in various costumes, including witches, the Tasmanian Devil and even a character from Beetlejuice.

Lorna Johnson died of lung cancer in June at the age of 56, several months after her husband had passed away. Not wanting her funeral to be a somber occasion, her family organized the rather bizarre funeral because of the special fun they had at Halloween.

Speaking after the funeral, Johnson’s son, Neil, said: “My mum’s favorite time of year was Halloween. We always had parties, dressed up, decorated the house. The kids loved it, we loved it. It was something we always did. She classed herself as a white witch and was into the tarot readings and that sort of thing.”

Co-op Funeralcare’s funeral director, Brett Houghton, got into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as the infamous villain from Star Wars, leading the funeral service.
